I have always considered myself to be healthy. I was never athletic (in fact I thought myself to be athletically challenged and had to take summer school PE once...) but I have been vegetarian since I was 11, didn't eat much junk food and was never really sick aside from the occasional cold. healthy, right?
Fast forward to 2012.
All of a sudden I noticed that I couldn't think clearly, more than just the typical forgetting where I put my keys; my mind cloudy all the time, but I brushed it off as not getting enough sleep. Then I started forgetting things like what I had done earlier in the day or what I just said only seconds prior...it was odd, but I still brushed it off as nothing. Then my hands started to shake uncontrollably or my arms and legs would go completely numb, but it eventually it would go away. After that, everything went down hill. I couldn't eat anything, some days my joints hurt so terribly that I could hardly stand, I was having difficulty stringing words together into a complete sentence and I was constantly in pain...I was only 20 years old but I felt 80! This lasted for months, and I ended everyday near collapse, all I wanted to do was lay in bed in pain. I had blood test after countless blood test taken, saw different doctors and neurologists, had MRIs done--all to no avail. Thousands of dollars later, the only answer I got was that it might be MS, but it is too hard to tell and to come back when I'm 30 and more damage has been done. Basically, good luck, there's nothing we can do, thanks for all your hard-earned tuition money, just suffer through it until you're 30 and we'll start all over again.
By that point, I had enough. I was ready to take my health into my own hands, and that was when I discovered clean eating.
Only a couple weeks into it I was already starting to feel like myself again. The spontaneous trembling went away, the stabbing pains that had radiated throughout my body subsided, my memory and focus was coming back and I had more energy each and everyday. Before I knew it, I was not only back to how I felt before getting sick, but felt better than ever before! I started running (me? run?! WHAT?!!), my skin cleared up, I was happier. When I was 15, I was diagnosed with clinical depression, it was inevitable as it ran in my family and was told that it I would be on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication for the rest of my life. WELL GUESS WHAT. Not only did I stop needing taking my medication when I started clean eating, but I am happier and less stressed than I ever was when I was on them, a huge feat for me, i was quite the ball of stress before. (If you are considering this, PLEASE talk to your doctor before stopping any medication, everyone is different!!!)
How did all of this happen you ask? Honestly, I may never know what or why I was sick, but I can tell you one thing: Clean Eating changed my life. Healthy, fresh food gives our bodies the nutrients it needs to take care of itself and perform its best. You may be 'eating' everyday, but are you really eating food?
Something I remember my mom telling me when I was little was that nature has a cure for everything, we just haven't found them all yet. And I truly believe it, more now than ever.
So here's the bottom line:
Take care of your body, and your body will take care of you.
