The most important thing you need to know when you go grocery shopping is to read labels and spend most of your time in the produce section. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the best way to go, as even the healthiest of pre-packaged food can be filled with hidden preservatives and mystery ingredients.
I will also start working on some shopping lists, but I usually make a B-line for the produce section and fill my cart with the most colorful things I can find.
Remember when you were a kid (and possibly still as an adult..) how the brightest, most colorful things always caught your attention? Mother nature did the same thing with the most nutrient-rich, anti-oxidant packed, good for you fruits and veggies. That's her way of flagging you down and giving you the best for your body. As a basic rule of thumb, the more colorful the food (NATURALLY colorful, dyes don't count!) the more vitamin-packed it is. So keep that in mind! You want your grocery cart to end up looking like a double rainbow by the time you get to the check out lane.
I used to get kind of anxious about going to the store, thinking that i needed to have my whole week planned out in order to get every ingredient. But now I just buy what ever fruits and veggies look the most enticing and decide what to do with them when I get home, it's a great way to try new foods and get the best of every season!
So About Shopping Organic.....
As amazing as shopping all organic can be, some of us (myself included) simply can't afford to go ALL organic. I would definitely rather pay the farmer a little more now than pay the doctor a whole lot more later, but sometimes that is easier said than done. Here is a list of The Dirty Dozen & The Clean Fifteen a simple guide that breaks down what is ok to buy non-organic and what should ALWAYS be bought organic.
